Apart from being absorbed as a living space giving a sense of security and love, for me, HOME is the space-self continuum. It is both representative of the extension of the intimate self as well as the “mask” or the exterior self.
I have taken this nationwide coronavirus lockdown in a very positive way. In the otherwise very busy schedule, it has given me the opportunity to explore the intimate space of the home, which I recognize as symbolic of the HINTERLAND (the land behind especially of a city or a port). The sociospatial relevance of home has created an uneasiness within my “self”. Being a very introvert person, I have been torn with the thought of sharing my intimate feelings through this visual exercise. The sunlight masquerades the rooms for an hour or so early in the morning creating this HINTERLAND of happenings beyond the scope of my immediate vision. It creates and re-creates magic.
And I have explored my intimate self to play with the light. The challenge thrown by the limited space and opportunity has acted as an abetment. The social distancing coupled with lockdown has restricted the “self” movement. There is this feeling of an isolated island as I go to the terrace to get some fresh air! The anxiety continues to stay, I constantly look for the equilibrium between the intimate and the distant; ‘mask’ and the ‘unmask’. The illusion, dreams, thoughts, anxiety, unconscious self –get illuminated through the visual drama. The shadows in this Hinterland are concerned with conflicting desires or intentions as the self tries to remain masked.
