5 Must-Have Apps For a Street Photographer

$

Mobile technology now allows street photographers a lot of freedom to click photos as and when they like. While photos with a DSLR take on a whole new dimension, some of the latest smartphones come equipped with amazing cameras with excellent picture taking capabilities. Moreover, thanks to various app developments, it is also now possible not just to take good photos with your mobile phone, but also edit and post them for the world to see.

5 Must-Have Apps For a Street Photographer

Just like spending time organizing your camera bag is an essential aspect before any photography trip, it is necessary to install some essential apps on your phone for the same. These apps go beyond the must-have photo apps that every street photographs should have in his repertoire. They go further than taking a picture and present a holistic approach to making sure that your photography excursion is fruitful and productive.

Google Maps

You cannot explore the streets of a town or a village without knowing where you are going. Although the idea of getting lost in a foreign place sounds adventurous and dreamy, it can also lead to anxiety. That’s something you don’t need when focusing on capturing that perfect shot. Google Maps is by far the best directional app in the market right now, and it comes with a variety of tricks that can be extremely helpful. Either lock in the place you want to go, or else spend some time to make a route that you intend to follow so that it’s one less thing you have to worry about later.

Spectre

Every street photographer is aware that sometimes the best photos require instant action. That’s why, even if you have the latest camera hanging off your shoulder, having a good camera app on your phone can be useful. Spectre is one such app that uses AI to take amazing long exposure shots. It’s simple to use and doesn’t cost much to buy. As a result, I can impress my fellow photographers with some cool night shots involving light streaks and movements.

Online Casino

Patience is a virtue that every photographer needs to have if they want to be successful. Taking the perfect photo often requires waiting for minutes or even hours. Photography can also be taxing on the mind as it involves attention to detail and intense concentration. So, something fun and relaxing as having an online casino game app can come in handy during such times. Online themed slots are especially the perfect way to spend time, earn money, and have fun. Personally, I love Greek history, and as a Canadian, Playtech’s Age of Gods reminds me of all the fantastic mythological characters that give Greece its vintage charm. Eventually, it was my visit to Greece that inspired me to become a travel photographer.

Snapseed

Undoubtedly, there are many editing tools available for photographers to take their photos to the next level. However, I found Snapseed to work brilliantly on the phone, with an easy to operate interface. If you are in a hurry to edit and post photos, Snapseed is ideal for such an occasion.

Instagram or Flickr

Nowadays, it is almost necessary for photographers to showcase their work. There are professional sites that are particularly for those who take photography seriously. However, for a more worldwide reach, it is essential to have a presence on social media. Both Instagram and Flickr are excellent options to share your photos with people around the world.

Google Photos

Batteries die, and phones get lost. Now, I make it a point to have Google Photos backup my pictures as and when I take them with my phone. A free service, not only does this allow me to categorize the photos based on dates and places, but also search for them later with ease.

I was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on September 1967. Photography has been a part of who I am and the way I see the world since the age of 12. I rediscovered photography in the early days of digital and for quite some time I focused on shooting travel and wildlife.

Since 2017, my focus has shifted completely to the street and since then it has been a complete rollercoaster as I find myself shooting with inspired street photographers in my home town and cities all over the world, I started my own projects and in 2018 I published my first book ‘Pier to Pier’ about the local sea bathing culture in Scheveningen. Also, I organized a solo exhibition on the Pier which lasted for 6 months and attracted more than 200,000 visitors.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Tell me something about you which nobody knows?

Well, I guess that few people know that I’m an economist, earning my income by writing business stories and publishing coffee table books about industries.

Please share your childhood dream and funny incidents if any?

Well, I had 2 dreams. The first was to grow older than my best friend (still working on that) and the second was to become an American Indian (I gave that one up).

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

What is your view about photography?

To me, photography is an art form, my great passion and also a way of life. Not only because it makes you look at the world in a different way, but also because it opens up many different worlds to me, which I would be unaware of if I did not photograph.

Also, the possibility to make a beautiful image out of an ordinary situation is hugely exciting and will keep me excited to the very last day I can hold a camera and look at work from other photographers.

I feel that on certain level photography teaches me more than just the art itself. It teaches about life, limitations, our place in the world, the dilemma’s we encounter and many other things. This is to me why photography is such great art at which one can always improve.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Which genre of photography do you like/practice and why?

Since I started doing photography at the age of 11, I have tried a lot of genres, such as wildlife, travel, macro, and even abstract photography. For the last 2 years, I have focused solely on street photography and I’ve become quite addicted to it.

I think that this genre – because of its un-staged and unpredictable nature – it’s so incredibly difficult to get a good shot, that it’ll probably keep me busy for a while.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Almost 90% of photographers find it hard to earn money out of photography. Any tips that might help photographers to earn money?

It is indeed very difficult to earn money in this profession. I think it is a shame to see how much money is paid for example by companies to business writers for creating stories in words compared to what they pay photographers who tell stories in pictures. Even in this visual world photographers find it hard to earn their income.

But you can’t help it, so there are 2 solutions to this in my opinion.

The first is to NOT see it as a profession but as a passion. As an artist, you need to be free. So, I do what I like to do and I mostly finance my projects with my work as a writer and publisher. In the meantime, there are some ways to earn back major investments such as books or exhibitions. I had great success with crowdfunding to finance my exhibition and use my book and skills to reward the people who supported me. The crowdfunding campaign proved to be very effective as well as a promotion campaign as people felt they were part of my success and shared images via social media.

The other solution is more complicated as it requires some other skills: as an entrepreneur. A photographer still can make money if he or she can change the game… don’t try to sell your work or get assignments through regular channels but create new ones. Think where you are good at and who can benefit from this. And then try to work out a partnership with these parties. I know it sounds a bit vague, but there are no simple answers.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Which photography agency you like and why?

Well, I don’t have a clue. Maybe this is because of my approach to photography (see the previous question) and maybe life could be much easier if I tried to link myself to one of those. But so far, I didn’t find the need.

I guess I like to be free and create my paths and if one day I meet someone who can convince me that an agency is what I need, I just might try it 😉

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Does good camera play a major role in photography?

No, it does not.

I don’t mean that I don’t care what camera to use. I love the camera that I use a lot. But from all the elements that make a good photograph, the camera itself plays a minor role.

Of course, specialty shots require specialty tools so it depends of course on your goals. A landscape photographer producing big prints will benefit from a medium format camera. But a street photographer can often also use a phone camera. Not always and everywhere, but the large depth of field and unobtrusive character of the phone helps to come really close.

Although I must admit that personally, I like to hold a ‘real’ camera to my eye to get in a certain flow which I need to produce good images.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Share three names of the photographers who has inspired you a lot?

Ed van der Elsken, a Dutch photographer and one of the first to do street for his spontaneous approach to people. Alex Webb, for his use of layers and light. And a lot of others, so they all count together as a third name.

Does social media like Facebook, Instagram, Google and some sites like 500px, Natgeoyourshot helps to get the attention of the viewers in larger aspect?

I started my Instagram account 2 years ago because of street photography and it has brought me a lot of inspiration and even friends. But lately, I’m taking more distance from the medium.

Facebook is an important platform for me as I’m part of several groups. Locally, nationally and internationally. Also, for the funding of my exhibition last year, Facebook was a major source. So yes, to me and my photography social media are very important.

But I want to stress that it is quite easy to get ‘addicted’ to likes. I had to go through that phase myself. Trying to please my public instead of thinking what I wanted to achieve myself. It is always good to take a step back now and then and try to remember why you are doing photography in the first place.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Do you think that a quality workshop can change the mindset or point of view of any photographer and why? Should we attend a quality workshop frequently?

Yes, I do. It was after I visited a workshop with Maciej Dakowicz in early 2017 that I discovered street photography. And the people I met on that workshop – although living on the other side of the world – have become good friends.

Since then, I have done 2 more workshops. mainly for inspiration and motivation. Because that is what it brings to me when going out with people who share the same passion and you can just focus on photography without holding back. This can take you to another level and bring you new insights.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

What is the difference between a good photographer and a bad photographer?

One major difference, in my opinion, is that bad photographers always tend to talk about cameras. Good photographers don’t. Another key characteristic of a good photographer I think is that he or she knows the camera so well, that he/she can judge the light and dial in the right settings so that he/she can just focus on the scenes evolving.

And a good photographer has bad phases too. Everyone has to deal with highs and lows. A good photographer just copes with this and keeps going out to shoot, go to museums, workshops, read books and then suddenly… you create some new images again.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

What is the difference between a good photograph and a bad photograph?

I think it is easier to describe a bad photograph than a good one, but I’ll try it anyway. I believe a really good photograph is a combination of technical factors, such as: good use of light, composition, subject, layers, sharpness, detail, but at the same time, a good photograph evokes emotion with the viewer. This can be by a subtle detail, or by insinuating a story, or in contrast by leaving out something,…. You see: It can be anything and this makes it very difficult to describe. A photograph should be seen and experienced. That’s why they are called photo-graphs.

Discussing good and bad photographs is very educating by the way. Trying to find objective criteria what make an image work.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

What should our moto towards photography- Self-satisfaction or viewers’ attention/satisfaction?

I hope I understand the question correctly, but in my opinion, any photographer should start from within. Ones own motivation is crucial: WHY are you taking a photograph? WHAT do you want to show? HOW do you want to show that?

If you can answer these 3 q’s, you have plenty of work to do and won’t have the time to bother what others think of it!

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

What is meant by comfort zone in photography? How it ruins the carrier?

To me, this is always shifting. Two years ago, I would take my zoom lens if I wanted someone close up. Now I shoot 28 mm and often from within 1-meter distance from people without any hesitation (well, that depends of course, but that is what I tell myself).

Now I’m shooting people so close, I have discovered that on the street one should also pay attention to respecting others. So, my next barrier is to connect with people. Creating new stories from people you actually communicate with and still keep the candid character on the street is highly satisfying.
Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

What is your opinion about documentary photography? Do you like it? If yes, why?

If there is any other genre besides street that I’m interested in, it’s documentary. I think I’m moving to a combination of both. Telling a story that goes beyond the single images is something that attracts me. But I like to approach it in a candid/ street way.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Light, decisive moment, content, ambiance, a good gear, according to you which is the most essential element in photography?

It’s all-important of course and it depends on the situation. Great content in a bad light can still make a fantastic photograph and bad content in good light can also look nice. But for a really good photograph the photographer, as an artist, these things have to be brought together. About the camera: a photographer uses the tool that he/she has available.

So the gear is important, but not as much as the other factors I think.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Are you associated with any particular brand or brand ambassador if yes, specify?

No, I shoot Leica because I really like the camera and lens, but I bought it from hard-earned cash 😉 It gives more freedom I think, when not connected to a brand.

If you were not a photographer then what it would be?

Well, I’m a writer and publisher as well, so I would stick with that. But I would be not as happy I think.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Concept and definition in photography are getting changed every day. what is your opinion about the future of photography?

I think that as the technique is further improving, it will be of less importance. Today everybody can make a good photograph with a phone. And camera’s are programmed to take over from people also the creative process. But there they will always lag behind what an artist can do. Be aware that YOU are in charge of the camera. Don’t let it make decisions for you and you’ll see that your photography will improve!

So, in my opinion, the future lies in creativity.

That is why I’m convinced that the art of photography will always have a place, just like books have while we all use digital media.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Which food do you like the most? Does it help you to explore more?

I like a lot of different kind of foods as I always look for different tastes. Just like with photography I like to explore.

Any message for the young photographers?

Yes, trust your own imagination. Fancy cameras look nice, but always remember that you are the photographer. So put your camera in manual mode and try new things!

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Are you engaged in any project-based work? Please share (only if you feel free to share)?

I think a photographer should always have at least 3 projects in the back of his head. This is what I do myself, although I do not always carry a camera around.

The first is my long-term project which I started 2 years ago about the local sea bathing culture in Scheveningen (where I live). I’ll continue to shoot there and next year a big exhibition in a local museum is planned where I’ll show new work from this project.

Another project which I just started is a long-term ambition and is about tourism in general. I can’t say too much about it as it is still in development.

And I have a few other side projects such as animals in the street, Northern Portugal, as I go there regularly, and I love to shoot on festivals too. So, yes there are always projects in my head!

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

What is your big achievement in photography?

My Pier to Pier project is my big achievement so far. Last year this project resulted in a book about and a large format solo exhibition, which lasted six months on the Pier of Scheveningen where my work has been seen by more than 200,000 people.

According to you what is the best photography magazine?

I don’t have a strong opinion about that, but I am a loyal fan of the British Journal of Photography. BJP has always great content! Also, I like ‘Eyeshot magazine’ beautifully designed, featuring great new talents in street photography.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

According to you name two best Facebook photography group?

To me personally, that is a Dutch local group called ‘Street Eye’ and a Facebook group linked to the workshops from Maciej Dakowicz. These groups are an invitation to make sure that like-minded people are joining. To me, the personal approach of these groups makes them great platforms for inspiration and a source for real-life contacts. Through these platforms I have met a lot of fellow street photographers in both my home country and abroad, we shoot together and make trips together and my next exhibition is a joint show with people I met in one of those groups.

Share your goal in photography?

Now that I have discovered street photography and found my own personal approach to it, my next goal is to use my capability to bring some messages across about issues that affect me personally. I think that with photography I can raise awareness and maybe have a small effect on the positive.

I already mentioned that I want to steer my street photography towards a more documentary approach. This is also where my future projects will probably be about.

Street Photographer Giedo van der Zwan In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Role of a smile in photography- share your views?

Funny last question! 😉 I actually like smiling people. In street photography, a smile towards a camera is mostly seen as a no-go area, but in my opinion, this does not always have to be the case. Dutch photographer Ed van der Elsken shows in his street work many smiling people. A smile is a very powerful emotion and the photographer who can capture this emotion (when it is truthful and unposed) has a chance to create a beautiful image!

Dogs And Their Rides: Fine Art Photography By Sandra Helsocht

Last year I had the craziest idea. What if clients allowed their beloved pets to sit in their vintage vehicles?

When talking to the pet owners, I found out that many dogs already had the time of their lives, cruisin’ with their humans during the weekend, going off sightseeing or simply go on a weekend trip.

These dogs turned out to be real pros when it came to posing together with their rides!

They get excited when that window drops so they can stick out their noses to the fresh air blowing in: “are we going yet”? Some of them have no limits either!

The look on their faces says it all!

This photo series won 1st Place in IPA Awards (International Photography Awards) in the category of Special/Pets. Congrats to Sandra from 121Clicks.com

About Sandra Helsocht

I am a natural light photographer and I love creating soft images with a lot of feel for mood and composition. Born with dogs by my side and a camera in my hand, I made it a long life passion to combine my love for dogs with Photography. I love capturing their true inner selves, smooshy faces, funny characters and create life-lasting memories.

Being fond of Classic Cars brought me to the idea to combine all 3 passions and this resulted in the Dogs and their Rides Project. The project started off in 2015 and still continues…… Every day I keep an eye out for unique combinations of dogs and cars to go create another fine art image to add to the series.

Besides photographing dogs in classic cars, I also love creating Whimsical Art. These images are created by using a playful style of editing which takes you to the wonderful world of my imagination. I call them fairytale-like, magical and dreamy.

These images put a stamp on my work and since 2018 I have been organizing workshops for beginners and proceeding in 2019 with workshops for the advanced photographers, exposing my workflow and share my retouching skills.

Poetry With Pixels: Winners And Honorable Mentions Of In-Street August 2019 Contest

Here are the results of the nineteenth In-street Monthly Thematic Contest – August 2019. The Street Photography Contest Theme for August 2019 was ‘Poetry With Pixels’.

We received lots of great images during August 01 – August 12, 2019 in our FB group. Thank you so much friends for your enthusiastic response and huge participation. We are very happy to see many images with some innovative interpretation of the monthly theme. It was a tough and exciting job for us to choose the best ones from so many great images.

It is with great pleasure that we announce our 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners along with 13 other honorable mentions.

We also have a special winner this time – The Mentor’s Choice image has been chosen by our Guest Mentor Rohit Vohra.

So here is the result… The winner is – Vipin Singh‎ !

1st Place Winner: Vipin Singh‎

Poetry With Pixels: Winners And Honorable Mentions Of In-Street August 2019 Contest

In Street Review: During this monthly Thematic Contest, we were looking for poetic images. Poetry is an elusive art form. It is one where you evoke emotions rather than describe what you feel. It is one of the most difficult things to bring in one’s pictures. Bringing poetry, emotions, evocation into an image goes beyond just shooting what you see in front of you. It’s about merging your inner world with the outside one and make something that hits you in your gut. Vipin’s image managed to do that: through his use of slow shutter, the choice of shooting color, the subject matter, he has elevated a mundane scene into a poem. The ambiance, the atmosphere, the little sparks all work together to bring our emotions forth. This is an image that begs to be looked at for a long time.

2nd Place Winner: Sachin Sawansiya

Poetry With Pixels: Winners And Honorable Mentions Of In-Street August 2019 Contest

3rd Place Winner: Sayan Acharya

Poetry With Pixels: Winners And Honorable Mentions Of In-Street August 2019 Contest

Mentor’s Choice: Manish Jaisi

Poetry With Pixels: Winners And Honorable Mentions Of In-Street August 2019 Contest

Guest Mentor’s Review: A pleasing scene, great play of black and white, the almost expressionless face of the subject looking directly at the viewer, silhouettes at the back, everything comes together in this one frame.

Poetry in photography is when you end up carrying the photograph in your mind, remembering it or even thinking about it just as you would hymn a song long after or just hearing it once. This photograph does that beautifully at the same time the photographer demonstrates the relationship between form and subject aesthetically.

There were other photographs that came close, but this is the winner for me.

3 Tips for Finding the Best Apps to Perfect Your Selfies

$
0
0

While taking a selfie doesn’t seem like a very complex task, creating the perfect one may require a few skills and special tools. Some people take selfies just for fun while others may take one to use as their profile picture online. Other individuals may want to use a selfie to mark a special occasion such as prom night, graduation, or going on a special vacation.

Regardless of what your reason may be for wanting to take the best selfie ever, There are a number of apps out there that can help you do just that. Using these apps along with the following tips can be a great asset when you want to achieve your picture perfect goals.

The Best 10 Selfie Apps

3 Tips for Finding the Best Apps to Perfect Your Selfies

Create a Selfie that is Honest And Shows the Real You

There’s a multitude of selfie apps out there that include elaborate filters to change your appearance. Sometimes these filters may cover up some minor imperfections while others add so much to your self-portrait that you are hardly recognizable. Although these filters may be fun and popular for creating teen selfies, they’re not allowing you to show the real you.

If you want to create the perfect selfie, choose an app and filter setting that doesn’t cover up who you are. Instead, use one that highlights your surroundings, or use a classic black and white filter that won’t take away from your true image. You can always add fun text or borders to the photo to make it more unique.

Find the Perfect App to Create the Best Glamour Selfies

If you truly want to glamorize your looks and make your selfie your very best photo, there are several programs available that can help. Many selfie apps now focus on beauty filters. These can sometimes help diminish dark spots and unwanted blemishes from your face to give your skin much clearer and youthful appearance.

There are also selfie filters that go much farther and completely transform your look including your hair color. Whether you want to be subtle with your looks or go a little more extreme, you have the option to do so when using these beauty selfie apps.

Keep in mind that the Best Selfie Apps Can’t Fix Human Error

Selfie apps have become very popular in recent years because they can sometimes help make your photos look even better. Or they can add unique filters which can be fun to share with your friends. But regardless of everything these apps can do, they can’t fix the human error. That means if you aren’t an expert photographer, you can still make mistakes that a photo app simply can’t correct.

Outdoor selfies can be a hit or miss situation where sometimes you’ll snap the perfect photo and other times you’ll end up with one you’d rather delete. Some people just have the right eye for taking photographs and know how to use the natural light of the great outdoors to their advantage. That’s why you will see some vacation images of beautiful beach or mountain landscapes made by your friends on social media that can’t compare to your own photos taken at the same location.

But, as long as you remember that selfie apps can’t correct every image, you will still be able to enjoy using them.

The evolution of the selfie is something that some people from older generations have yet to grasp while those as young as 10 or 11 years can do easily in just one snap. Take some time to try out various selfie apps and check out examples of some of the best selfies online to get an idea of how to create the ideal selfie that you and your followers are sure to love.

Zahir Abbas is a passionate street photographer from Lexington, Kentucky USA. He is a member of In-Street collective and finalist for the Mobile category in Street Photo San Francisco festival’ 2017.

For Zahir, street photography is “The challenge to create something unique and beautiful out of a mundane and routine situation. Sometimes its also a challenge to create something out of a very difficult condition. The thrill to bring together various visual elements into a single canvas is unbelievable.”

Thanks, Zahir for accepting for the invite. Please read on…

Inspiring Interview With Indian Street Photographer Zahir Abbas

Hi Zahir, thank you for joining us here today! First, could you please introduce yourself?

Thank you for the opportunity. I am a photographer based in Lexington, Kentucky USA. My day job is of a Business consultant working in the area of generating business insights with the help of data analytics and AI.

Inspiring Interview With Indian Street Photographer Zahir Abbas

Inspiring Interview With Indian Street Photographer Zahir Abbas

Please share some of your childhood memories towards the art?

I remember I use to own a Zenit Camera and I would roam around taking pictures in family weddings and travels. I was also into sketching and pencil drawing.

Inspiring Interview With Indian Street Photographer Zahir Abbas

When did you start shooting and how did this love for photography happen?

I was taking photographs since my school days. But I started doing serious photography since the last 3-4 years. That is when I discovered candid/street photography.

What makes street photography so special for you?

The challenge to create something unique and beautiful out of a mundane and routine situation. Sometimes its also a challenge to create something out of a very difficult condition. The thrill to bring together various visual elements into a single canvas is unbelievable.

Inspiring Interview With Indian Street Photographer Zahir Abbas

Inspiring Interview With Indian Street Photographer Zahir Abbas

What do you look for when deciding who to photograph?

I would replace “who” with what to photograph. I am always looking for conditions which can help me create something inquisitive or simple pretty. Situations where there are intertwined elements (light, forms, objects, humans, animals, color, texture…) connected in some way, I am happy to press the shutter and find what gets created.

What do you hope people take away from your work?

I would like the viewer to feel touched in some way after seeing my photographs. They should spend 3 mins thinking about the picture. That should be a big thing for me.

What was the proudest moment in your photography career so far?

I was happy when a couple of my pictures were published in Raghu Rai’s magazine. I was also very happy when some of the pictures got published in Kaushal Parikh’s lovely erstwhile magazine called “Deep Freeze”.

You are a member of In-Street Collective. When did you join this group and a few words about your fellow members?

I joined in-Street collective in 2017. This is a bunch of extremely talented individuals. I respect their work. Specially, their dedication and enthusiasm in promoting the genre of street photography in India.

Inspiring Interview With Indian Street Photographer Zahir Abbas

What is that you have adhered and learned through photography over the years?

Keep experimenting and never constrain yourself with any definition. Have fun with the camera and keep it simple in terms of messaging.

Inspiring Interview With Indian Street Photographer Zahir Abbas

Inspiring Interview With Indian Street Photographer Zahir Abbas

What is a good photograph for you?

A good photograph for me is that which is simple in messaging. Something which I don’t have to spend hours trying to figure out. I don’t like to intellectualize photographs. For me either I get it or not.

Which photographers have inspired you?

Many of them. Naming some won’t be correct. But I do get inspired by the path some of the contemporary Indian photographers continue to show on how to grow and keep hustling. My first mentor Swarat Ghosh and my first supporter Babul Bhatt. I am also a big fan of a crazy artist called Suvomoy Mitra.

Inspiring Interview With Indian Street Photographer Zahir Abbas

Inspiring Interview With Indian Street Photographer Zahir Abbas

What camera and lenses do you use the majority of the time?

Since you asked, iPhone XR, Fujifilm Instax, Fujifilm XT1+23mm in that order

Any favorite photography books?

Some of them do but I won’t like to name any specific (that’s because I can’t remember the names readily). I am looking forward to the book which Suvomoy Mitra created.

What does Zahir do when not behind the lens?

I read about the cultures, History, photography books, go and visit some museums when I travel, etc.

What is your favorite motto?

It keeps changing with age and phase of life, nowadays I love the one which says “First two you give, last one you earn” (This is from the apparel brand Under Armour)

Apart from photography, tell me about your hobbies and interests?

I travel a lot due to work, therefore I like to spend time with my family.

Thanks again for providing 121 clicks with this opportunity to interview you. Any final thoughts for our readers?

Thank you for this. I can say, photography is not everything. Your life is much bigger than this and photography is just one aspect of you. So, enjoy the “bigger picture”. Spend time with family and friends, do other stuff. You don’t have to always shoot pictures. You don’t have to share every shot. Meet people, chat, walk, commit stupid mistakes, smile. It’s ok to miss few shots.

In the digital age very often the sensation of those mechanical miracles seems to disappear, in a time where “analog” film cameras retain their sometimes strange and special character while the digital design is seemingly far ahead by any means.

Photographer J. F. Novotny’s ongoing project “CameraSelfies” featuring vintage cameras portraying themselves on the background of contemporary wallpapers. His goal is to capture 100 cameras and he reached 93. Please check his website, for more old and vintage cameras.

How to Fix Audio Video Sync Issues While Playing Videos Files

“The most part of my favorite Julia Roberts’ ‘Notting Hill’ plays fine, but after an hour of smooth play,140seconds audio goes out of sync with the visuals. How can I fix the audio sync problem in the movie saved on my computer?”

How to Fix Audio Video Sync Issues While Playing Videos Files

Something as obvious as lip-sync in a movie can become immensely annoying when it is not in place. Abrupt lip-syncing, out-of-sync, audio lag, or missing sound in a video can ruin your experience. It is definitely unacceptable and so you may want to fix audio and video sync problem in your favorite video.

But how?

You might not have the technical knowledge to fix videos and you are looking for the best ways to do the task? Addressing the problem, here we bring the various methods to fix audio and video sync issues.

How to fix audio and video sync in Videos

  1. Sync audio and video in VLC Media Player
  2. Sync using Video EditingPrograms
  3. Use Avidemux to fix Audio Sync
  4. Use a Video Repair Tool to sync audio and video

1. Sync audio and video in VLC Media Player

Out-of-sync or audio lag can well be tackled by using free and open source VLC Media Player. But before you begin, know its limitation too —VLC Player is a temporary solution as you cannot save the settings that fix the audio lag. Every time you open the video in VLC, you will have to fiddle with the settings to fix the audio lag. So if you are looking to fix audio and video sync permanently, VLC Player is not the option. However, it is the useful method worth trying, as you can at least play your videos right away without audio sync issues.

Follow the below steps to fix audio sync issue in VLC Media Player

  • Open your video file in VLC
  • Select Tools> Track Synchronization

How to Fix Audio Video Sync Issues While Playing Videos Files

  • Under Audio/Video section across ‘Auto track synchronization’ adjust the audio time. Note:Increase the time if the audio plays before the visualand decrease if it plays after the visual.

How to Fix Audio Video Sync Issues While Playing Videos Files

Note:You can adjust the settings using shortcut keys on your keyboard as well. Press K, to slow down your audio and J if the audio lags behind the visual. On Mac computer, use G and F key for the purpose.

2. UseAvidemux to fix Audio Sync

When it comes to open-source tools to fix audio lag, Avidemux can’t be ignored. The free tool is designed to do basic video editing tasks such as cut, edit, convert, audio sync, and filter. Unlike VLC Media Player, you can fix the audio lag in the video file and save it on your computer.
Avidemux works on popular video files such as AVI, MP4, ASF, MKV, FLV etc.

Steps to fix audio lag in a video file using Avidemux

  • Open the problem video file in Avidemux
  • Set the ‘Video Output’ to ‘Copy’
  • Set ‘Audio Output’to ‘Copy’
  • Set correct ‘Output Format’

Note: If you copied AVI file set Output format to AVI Muxer; if it’s an MP4 file, set it MP4 Muxer and so on.

How to Fix Audio Video Sync Issues While Playing Videos Files

  • Check in the ‘Shift’ option and enter the positive/ negative value to fix the audio problem.
Note: If the audio is faster than visual, enter a negative value. If it lags behind the video and you want to increase its speed, enter the positive value. For example, -200 value, will load audio200 milliseconds before while +200 value will load the audio 200 milliseconds after. Play the video to check if the audio sync is achieved. If not, again set the values until you get it right.
  • Now to save the video clip go to File> Save> Save Video

3. Sync Audio by using Video Editing program

Professional Video Editing programs such as Adobe Lightroom, Lightworks, Premier Pro, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve have the provision to fix audio sync issues. They provide synchronization options like merge clips or manual syncing wherein you can mix the audio video clips to get theperfect audio playback.

Use the Video Editing programs and experiment with the settings to get the perfect audio and video sync. You can take the help of free online tutorials available for this software.

The professional editing programs are efficient in fixing audio lag problems. However, on the flip side, they are time taking and require a lot of expertise to get the best results. Not to forget, the price factor, which is also a bit steep.

4. Use a video repair tool to sync audio and video

Video repair software is popularly used to fix various types of corruption issues in the video files. Some advanced tools such as Stellar Repair for Video can fix out-of-sync, audio lag, missing sound problems as well. Compared to Video Editing programs, it is fast and easier to use. Simply download the software on your Mac or PC. Add the problem video file in the software interface, click ‘Repair’ followed by ‘Save’.

How to Fix Audio Video Sync Issues While Playing Videos Files

You can also ‘Preview’ the repaired video before saving it.

How to Fix Audio Video Sync Issues While Playing Videos Files

The software can fix audio or video lag in videos from Android, smartphone, iPhone, iPad, DSLR, digicam, security camera, dashcam etc. It can work effectively on both 4K UHD movies and short video clips.

Wrapping Up

Open source tools like VLC Media Player and Avidemux are must-try whenever you want to fix audiovisual synchronization issue. Though not always, but most of the time they have proved to be successful.

On the other hand, the video editing programs are more powerful with several features including audio synchronization. But you should be proficient in the software to get the perfect audio sync in the video. The easier and quick approach to fix audio sync problem in your videos, is to use an advanced video repair software. This method lets you fix multiple out-of-sync video files simultaneously. But remember, a video repair software is not an editing tool. It fixes audio sync problems and corruption but doesn’t edit, crop, merge or filter your videos.

Siddhartha’s journey has by no means been smooth or easy, he is a common man with a routine job, who has struggled in his domestic life. What had begun as only the documentation of his avid traveling and wanderlust, underwent many twists of life and fate to become the apex of the street genre it is today.

My Personal Best: Indian Street Photographer Siddhartha Paul

Diagnosed with severe eyesight issues and suspected eye cancer, almost put an end to his passion for photography leaving him physically and mentally broken, with no clear path to move ahead, this deep thinking and sensitive man, did not stop embracing life with whatever little he had. Being forbidden to get out in the bright sun, he continued to take pictures from within his room and in the evening. He fell in love with the old charms of the city anew. He fell in love with something so many of us take for granted, his eyesight.

Indian Fine Art Photographer Jeet Mukerji In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

A dotted father, an entrepreneur, a fanatic country music and classic rock fan, an avid driver who has more or less self driven the country by road, but a little boy of nine three and a half decades back then, Jeet Mukerji used to look down and observe the magnetic dance of the sun-rays with his shadow with varying intensities and positions.

The boy grew up to be a Master in Business Administration and Information Technology Management, but the passion and curiosity never ran out. After 18 rigorous years of a corporate grind as Profit Centre heads with Blue Chip Indian Companies, Jeet Mukerji took up Fine Art as his muse.

Indian Fine Art Photographer Jeet Mukerji In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Tell me something about you which nobody knows?

I understood the concept of compositions of photography by watching images of crushed/accidental cars. Don’t get petrified or surprised. Actually, my father had industrial photography as a KRA of his job and that is how, I came across such images.

Please share your childhood dream and funny incidents if any?

Childhood dreams….aah well..that is a very long list…but I assure you, it had nothing to do with photography… infact one that I remember is…I wanted to be a Mexican cowboy.. Haha.. Yes.. I wanted to be one. For the funny incident part… well I ain’t sure this is funny or not, but I used to play with my shadows on the wall or the ground…always tried to catch it…never managed. Kind of funny for me though.

Indian Fine Art Photographer Jeet Mukerji In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

What is your view about photography?

Well if I talk about views….then I would say…Photography is the reflection of the inner mind and soul. An artist reproduces whatever his mind produces.

Which genre of photography do you like/practice and why?

I love PHOTOGRAPHY. As for practice, I am a keen observer and practitioner of low key fine-art nude and love to play around with light and shadows.

Almost 90% of photographers find it hard to earn money out of photography. Any tips that might help photographers to earn money?

In today’s world, marketing yourself is a very important tool, if you wish to have a career in photography. And to do that you need to reach out to a maximum number of people. Art can be dealt with later, but if you want to earn money, then you need to think commercially. Art is for the soul, money is for the stomach. To survive you need to blend both intelligently.

Indian Fine Art Photographer Jeet Mukerji In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Does good camera play a major role in photography?

Yes, it does, though I grew up with a Nikon D7000 but the role of a good camera only comes into effect in the later stage. The primary or most important aspect of photography is the MIND inside you, the VISION inside you. If you are able to envisage the unseen amongst the seen, then you are 70% done. I will leave 20% on the camera and 10% to post-processing.

Share three names of the photographers who have inspired you a lot?

Prabuddha Dasgupta, Raghu Rai, Kevin Carter

Indian Fine Art Photographer Jeet Mukerji In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Does social media like Facebook, Instagram, Google and some sites like 500px, NatGeo your shot helps to get the attention of the viewers in larger aspect?

Of course, it does.

Do you think that a quality workshop can change the mindset or point of view of any photographer and why? Should we attend a quality workshop frequently?

It is of paramount interest for any photographer to attend a quality workshop. We all have it inside us to envisage, but somewhere we need a GUARDIAN ANGEL who will open up our vision towards the outer world. And a quality workshop does just that. But every individual should remember that they should attend the workshop to learn from the MENTOR and not become a PHOTOCOPY of the Later. One’s own style and identity are of significant importance to carve a NICHE for oneself in the field of art.

Indian Fine Art Photographer Jeet Mukerji In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

What should our moto towards photography- Self-satisfaction or viewers’ attention/satisfaction?

For me, it has always been SELF SATISFACTION.

What is meant by comfort zone in photography? How it ruins the carrier?

Aah, that’s my favorite question. When we all started as a photographer, we would click every genre that we could lay our hands on…. but slowly we graduated into one specific genre where we felt, we could excel and we started practicing likewise. But that was when we got into our comfort zone. We left behind corpses of our talent, which could have sparkled in some other genre as well. We tended to trivialize, we tended to succumb to the lethargic inner self, which we never had when we started. The hunger inside us satiated and EGO settled in. That is the BEGINNING OF THE END. Unlearning whatever one learns is the best way to LEARN DEEPER.

Indian Fine Art Photographer Jeet Mukerji In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

What is your opinion about documentary photography? Do you like it? If yes, why?

That’s the genre of a SNIPER in the world of photography. Decisive timing at its best gets immortalized in years to come. Remember I mentioned Raghu Rai & Kevin Carter as one of my favorite photographers!! That explains it all about my liking for the genre.

The light, decisive moment, content, ambiance, a good gear, according to you which is the most essential element in photography?

Don’t mind but that’s an extremely elementary question. It is always the CONTENT and nothing but it. Others are only a subset of the former, executed with proper planning and vision.

Are you associated with any particular brand or brand ambassador if yes, specify?

Yes I am a Mentor with Zeiss Camera lenses.

Indian Fine Art Photographer Jeet Mukerji In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Do you feel any pressure being an ambassador of any brand? If yes, how do you cope up with the pressure? Does this tag help to get more audience?

Naah I never felt any pressure being an ambassador. Well, the tag surely builds up your own brand and instills a sense of BELIEF amongst your fans and followers.

If you were not a photographer then what it would be?

Never thought about it…but I guess It would be a TRAVELLER exploring countries.

Indian Fine Art Photographer Jeet Mukerji In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Concept and definition in photography are getting changed every day. what is your opinion about the future of photography?

Yes, of course, the concept and definition in photography are changing every day. Gears are getting more user-friendly. Editing skills are getting enhanced, but ultimately all of the above components are a failure, if the content or the composition lacks the attraction power.

So my heartfelt opinion is….the fundamentals and the basics should be strong to capitalize on the ever-changing concepts and definition of the art. Remember…there will always be something better tomorrow than today or yesterday, but to embrace it, you need to ensure that your yesterday and today was and is firmly placed in the ground.

Which food do you like the most? Does it help you to explore more?

Hahaha…I am a foodie…Just giving you a hint…to reach me..you need to come through my tummy.

Indian Fine Art Photographer Jeet Mukerji In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Any message for the young photographers?

Be your own self and not the first copy of your inspiration.

What is your big achievement in photography?

For me, it will always be the day when my father first agreed to wash my cut reel. Rest you can find on the internet.

According to you what is the best photography magazine?

Yet to find the perfect one.

According to you, name two best Facebook photography group?

This is a very unrealistic question. The quality life or longevity of a group in facebook is hardly 2 to 3 years, typically like a PLC of a product. Stagnation settles in. Images get repetitive. The quest for the group of the hour should be continuous in the expectation of viewing the best creations of others. Actually, Photo Artists are like NOMADS…they keep traveling from one group to other. So for me…all of them are doing a decent job as per their bandwidth.

Indian Fine Art Photographer Jeet Mukerji In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

Kindly share top five Instagram account everybody should follow?

I believe that should be genre-specific and individual choices, which I don’t believe in piling upon others. Word of advice….Keep a close watch on your favorite Hashtags…and you will find your person to follow.

Share your goal in photography?

My Journey….Goals will automatically fall in place.

Role of the smile in photography- share your views?

Extremely Important. But not all images can bring a SMILE on your face. So, understand the essence of the photograph before being judgemental about it.
