Does good camera play a major role in photography?

In the case of street photography “good camera” does not play a major role. But there are other forms of photography like fashion, landscape, wildlife, etc. where the good camera could play a role.

Share three names of the photographers who have inspired you a lot?

Steve Mccurry, Raghubir Singh, and Soumya Shankar Ghosal.

Does social media like Facebook, Instagram, Google and some sites like 500px, NatGeo your shot helps to get the attention of the viewers in larger aspect?

These social media sites and well-known photography related sites provide a platform for photographers to showcase their work to a worldwide audience.

Do you think that a quality workshop can change the mindset or point of view of any photographer and why? Should we attend a quality workshop frequently?

Photography workshop conducted by photographers who have made a mark in their own genre of photography could be helpful. These workshops allow the upcoming photographers to understand various angles of photography and the specific point of view of the mentor.

What is the difference between a good photographer and a bad photographer?

For me, a good photographer must have a proper sense of light, color, human emotions, and composition.

What is the difference between a good photograph and a bad photograph?

For me, the photographs that narrate simple moments of life, which everybody can relate easily is a “good” photograph.

What should our moto towards photography- Self-satisfaction or viewers’ attention/satisfaction?

I take photographs of self-satisfaction and relaxation. If the viewer is able to relate with my point of view I am more than happy.

Indian Street Photographer Atanu Pal In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

What is meant by comfort zone in photography? How it ruins the carrier?

Our urge to capture more moments and in a better form helps us going. If a photographer loses his appetite for betterment, it will definitely ruin his carrier.

The light, decisive moment, content, ambiance, a good gear, according to you which is the most essential element in photography?

For me “Light, decisive moment and content” is most important.

Indian Street Photographer Atanu Pal In Conversation With Raj Sarkar

If you were not a photographer then what it would be?

Maybe a painter.

Concept and definition in photography is getting changed every day. What is your opinion about the future of photography?

I think the basic fundamentals of photography will never change. With time the interpretation of a photograph might change.

The Vintage Camera Quest: How it started By Roberto Serrini

Like everyone I suspect, I had no choice falling in love with photography. My grandfather had a camera slung round his neck with the same frequency that dudes at Home Depot rock Oakley’s, that is, pretty much day and night. Growing up with him on Long Island some of my earliest memories have to do with the sound of a shutter or the smell of stop bath. At 15, after an olympic amount of begging, my pop bought me my very first camera, a Canon AE1 from a little pawn shop for 60 bucks, which I also donned day and night, well into college. I went to Brooks briefly before cheating on my first love and started romancing film production, a younger, sexier version of my old girl. While I made a career at being a director, I never fully turned my back on the girl that took my artistic virginity from me.

20 years later I direct commercials and do a fair amount of travel writing. I find myself traveling all over the world, and while like everyone else I have a killer camera imbedded right in my phone, I am always wandering flea markets and bazaars looking for anything with a lens and shutter. Over the years I collected 52 film cameras, and proudly displayed them in my little NYC apartment, each reminding me of a different corner of the earth I picked them up from. It’s always made me happy, and reminded me of what started it all.

Now however, it kind of disgusts me.

Recently, I looked at the shelf and saw something different. Something made me sad. Lament. It no longer looked like a showcase, but a prison for these beautiful, weird, and wonderful little boxes of magic. I immediately got an idea. Taking each one down and dusting them off I went through them all, cleaning, repairing if needed, and cataloging them all. I decided that instead of letting these ladies sit and collect dust in a hipster shrine I was going to put them to work, let their legs stretch and run film through all of them.

52 cameras, 52 weeks in a year, sounds like it was meant to be.

The Vintage Camera Quest: How it started By Roberto Serrini

It has become way too easy to rely on the digital format. It’s fast, versatile and forgiving, which are none of the reasons I fell in love with film in the first place. These cameras are visceral, organic, and specific. They force you to connect with the world around you, to think about aperture, time and movement and be present. More than anything they’re fun, start conversations, bring people together, and are living history.

The first camera I posted about was my Grandfather’s Brownie. I thought it fitting since he was the main motivation behind my love affair with film. Not the oldest camera in the collection, but definitely well travelled through time and space, she still works without complaint, not surprising considering that you could basically make this camera with scraps found around the house. They don’t have to be complicated, advanced, or sophisticated to be interesting, in fact, I love how dumpy, clunky, and real some of these boxes of banality can be. I decided to also post an original film strip I took with this very camera over 20 years ago in High School, having always kept my negatives for what I could only assume was this very reason.

Taking her out in the streets was even more bizarre, to think that this nearly 50 year old little guy from Soviet Russia probably never thought it would find itself looking at Queens NY in its lifetime, is here, snapping away. Thinking what this lens has seen, the people it has snapped and the hands that had held it made me elated. Like a lightning bolt I was 19 again and had remembered something I hadn’t thought of in decades. I remembered the moment I fell in love with film.

Commence flashback Sequence, Fall, 1997. UCSB.

I snuck into a film class one afternoon having been told on lukewarm authority that it was a good way to get to watch a free movie. Instead I was introduced to professor Edward Brannigan who stood on stage alone, holding a picture of an old man in front of an auditorium filled to the brim with hungry film students. I didn’t know at the time, but this moment would change my life like no other before or since.

“Here is a picture of your grandfather,” Brannigan bellowed with the gravitas of a Moses. I wanted to laugh, but the weight of the room was so heavy, every student tuned in, that i was muted. “The sun, 92 million miles away, ejects a single photon into the black infinite of space. It can travel in any direction, but, by some divine providence, is aimed directly at Earth. 8 cold, long minutes later it reaches the planet, at which point it strikes with gentle fury the face of your grandfather, bounces off illuminating him, and travels through the lens of your camera. At that very moment, for a very fraction of a second you open the gate and allow that very photon to pass through, to be imbedded into a strip of Celluloid.”

I was of course high, it was college after all, but I definitely wasn’t high enough for this metaphysical mojo.

“The luck of this is mind-blowing by any standard, however, the real mind-fuck is when you push light back through the celluloid, reigniting the photon, to continue the journey of that photon frozen in time, as it bounces off a screen and terminates in your eye, infighting your synapses. This is not a picture of your grandfather. This is your grandfather. The very photos are a piece of him, as every frame is a piece of the universe you capture.”

Boom. Mind blown. What Brannigan said that day embedded in my mind like photons on celluloid. Now, years late, I find myself on the street, with a little magic box, capturing the universe around me, photon by photon, feeling the same sense of wonder and joy that I felt the first time I picked up a camera.

It is all too easy to forget how absolutely amazing photography is. We create and consume images now with the frequency of breathing, and the days of sitting for a portrait or having a daguerreotype be the proud center of attention in your home are long gone. Yet, by taking these otherwise unremarkable clunkers out on the street and breathing a little life into them, they become so much more than interesting tchotchke on an Ikea shelf. I’m not saying we’re curing cancer here or doing some revolutionary art, quite the opposite; it’s reverence for all the art and innovation that has gotten us to this point. To all the experiences and memories that let us fall in love with the world as it is today.

My collection has a bit of everything, from glass plate, to microfilm, lenticular to panoramic. The only curation process was fate, of being somewhere and seeing a glint of glass or frayed strap, being in the right time and place, much like capturing a rogue photon from the sun I suppose. I look forward learning about these little beasts, having fun with them, getting frustrated with them, meeting people with them, and sharing them with whoever might be interested in keeping them alive. I dedicate this project to my Grandfather, who knew that the weight of a camera continually around your neck was nothing compared to the gravity it could bring your soul.

OCEANUS - Marine Geophysical Survey In Anfeh Lebanon By Pygmalion Karatzas

It was a privilege to be asked by prof. Giorgos Papatheodorou to join and document their marine geophysical surveying of the Anfeh region in Lebanon. The OCEANUS team of the University of Patras was invited by the Department of Archaeology and Museology of the University of Balamand and I joined their expedition between June 25 and 30, 2017. Being my first time in Lebanon as well as in such an expedition, brought a fluid combination of adjusting and exploring this new subject matter with my on-going integral approach to photography. The first day was spend in the sea, documenting the geophysical surveying of the team covering a large part of the sea north and south of the Anfeh peninsula. The second and third day were spend on land photographing the bay, village, promontory, the excavations of the archeologies, as well as near by historic landmarks like the Deir el-Natour monastery and saltworks. The forth day was spend in Byblos covering the castle, marina, and old town. The fifth day included a visit to the campus of the University of Balamand, the Balamand Abbey and the Phoenician wall in Batroun.

Parallel to photographically documenting their expedition, I took a series of long exposure images from the coast. The long exposure technique uses light to create images not visible to the naked eye, similarly to the sonic pulses of the side scan sonar and sub-bottom profilers technology, using sound to create images of the seafloor. The collected visual data are then processed and analysed to provide decisive information for the survey and also to serve as archival documents for further studies. In a similar manner, the raw long exposure images are further post-processed to add visual presence, depth and a unifying minimalist underscore, fusing the boundaries between representational and pictorial iconography in its exploration of the integral perspective. The topographic-objective perspective was used to familiarise with the location and produce images that can be viewed with interest both by local people who know the area well, and by a broader audience who is outside the geo-archaeological field. The expressionist-subjective perspective was also included to add a feeling of timelessness, as these traces of civilisation extend through millennia. Their photographic treatment is intended to elevate them to pure existence, an on-site iconographic museum display.

Selected images from this project have received distinctions in international photography competitions: International Photography Awards 2017, Tokyo International Foto Awards 2018, Siena International Photo Awards 2019.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

Turkish photographer Alper Yesiltas explains step by step process of how to capture a conceptual photo.

“To Read”

In art, it’s always easy to find a subject to read but it’s always difficult to find a way to interpret it. In this photo, I tried to interpret “Reading” through a reader with the burning newspaper and the facial expression behind burning lines.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

“To Write”

Reading is one of the simplest actions because you always read what others wrote (as it is now). What you’ve been reading could be right or wrong.

I wanted to interpret “Writing”. But it wasn’t that easy. Writing is something that mankind could only discover after long thinking and learning about how to drive and create certain mechanisms.

In order to explain how to write, I decided that I had to create some mechanisms and use them.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

“First Test Shot”

The place you see in this photo is a friend’s studio. This is a test photo I took the first day I saw the place. When I looked at the place from that angle, some images started to appear in my mind.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

“Darkness, Light, Black, White”

In order to emphasize the illumination of writers to its surroundings in historical scale is the most important initiative in the process that leads people from darkness to light, I thought of placing black and white, that is dark and light, as a main symbol to the photograph.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

“Writing Equipment”

According to the “Writer” picture in my head, a writer would need a table, a typewriter and a large number of books.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

“150 kg”

The problem was that in order to capture the image in my mind, the frame of the photograph had to be kept a little wide, so the table had to be preferably larger than the size of the frame.

The outside of the frame in the photograph I was going to shoot would be as busy as the interior.

I was fortunate to find a proper piece wood that I could use as a tabletop in the clutter of a carpenter in the same street. Although it was very hard to carry the piece because it was 4 meters wide and weighs about 150 kg.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

“Iron Works”

After that, I needed an iron setup that will have the most important role in the photograph I will shoot, because it was going to be made in a larger size than the frame, so it was going to be invisible.

We spent a lot of time cutting iron at a workshop downstairs.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

“Setting Things Up”

My giant iron setup was finally ready. After bringing it to the studio and spending a few hours, we finally managed to build it.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

“Hovering Books”

The task of the giant iron setup was to create a ceiling with a depth that could be used to hung a lot of books in several places, so they could be suspended in the air.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

“The Moment”

The photograph would be the depiction of an abstract moment in the author’s mind. The books had to move in such a way that a harsh wind broke away from the ground.

The depth of the ceiling was therefore important. I would be able to freely determine the movement I would create by adding the books back to back.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

“An Invisible Trick”

I fixed the books to the ceiling using fishing lines, safety pins and buttons.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

“Framing”

Close to the end, the objects in the frame looked like this.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

“Last Test Shot”

I took myself countless times using the camera’s timer to make the necessary adjustments.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

“The Result”

I created the mechanism I needed to turn the reflection of the act “Writing” in my mind, into a picture.

This reflection was completed with the unique response of my friend, actor, Ercan Kesal.

Reading & Writing: Step By Step Of A Conceptual Photo By Alper Yesiltas

About Alper Yesiltas

My name is Alper Yesiltas, lawyer & photographer living in Istanbul, imagining scenes and capturing memories for about 15 years. During that time, some of my photos are edited worldwide in books, magazines, exhibitions, web sites and were awarded in several photo contests. I believe photographic eye is in a person’s brain, not in his/her bags or hanged around his/her neck. If you manage to put it somewhere in your brain, every moment is the right moment to take it. So think about it. Remember, it’s your imagination, everything’s possible in your scene.

Prudhvi Chowdary is a passionate and full-time photographer from Hyderabad, India. He is also Chief Photography Officer at Picxy.com, South Asia’s Largest Stock Photo Company. He started photography in 2013, he is mainly interested in Travel and Landscape Photography. Thank you Prudhvi, for accepting our invite. Please read on…

Interview With Indian Travel Photographer Prudhvi Chowdary

Hi Prudhvi, thank you for joining us here today! First of all, could you please introduce yourself?

I am the CPO (Chief Photography Officer) at Picxy.com, South Asia’s Largest Stock Photo Company. I am an Alumni of VIT, Vellore where I majored in Mechanical Engineering after which I worked for a couple of years before I started pursuing my PGDM (MBA) from IMT Hyderabad where I majored in Operations & Analytics and worked with InRhythm Inc. for around four years as a Market Research Analyst and I took over as CPO of Picxy, recently turning my passion towards photography into my profession.

Please share some of your childhood memories towards the art?

It was our neighbor during my childhood, who was a photographer by himself & the owner of a famous photo studio in the town we were living in. I used to be his experimenting subject for portraits & it was my first encounter with the camera to my remembrance. I used to be dressed up differently every day during my holidays to be photographed by him. That always remained to be a special memory to me till date.

Interview With Indian Travel Photographer Prudhvi Chowdary

When did you start shooting and how did this love for photography happen?

It started in the year 2013 after I joined IMT Hyderabad for my PGDMprogramme. It was during the Orientation Program that one of the lecturers(Dr.Archana Pillai) who was supposed to be the head of different academic activities in the college had asked me to cover the event on the first day and I did it with the only purpose of impressing her for better opinion about me as a student. Started shooting initially only in the auto mode and slowly started observing the EXIF details to learn the manual and other modes. It was a reverse learning process.

Dr. Archana Pillai - Interview With Indian Travel Photographer Prudhvi Chowdary

Dr. Archana Pillai

What makes travel and landscape photography so special to you?

I believe that travel broadens one’s view of the world. Experiencing other cultures, meeting people from other communities and other countries and seeing the beauty, and sometimes ugliness, of the world has helped me understand that all of our lives are at once interconnected and individual. It has made me better appreciate my own home and culture, as well as that of the people I’ve met and the lands I’ve seen and I, have become a much more tolerant person as a result. Through my photography, I seek to document my own personal experiences, to capture scenes and events as I see them and to share with others the beauty and diversity of a place.

Few words about your travel experiences?

It was quite a challenge previously to balance out the IT Profession in which I was working in & my travel plans. However better planning had always helped me without any hassle & my best travel experience will always be my journey to Ladakh & Kumbhmela and photographing it in very adverse conditions.

Before you start a shoot/travel, how will you prepare yourself?

I go through a couple of things which remain mandatory during any travel/shoot I do much before in hand. Firstly, travel with like-minded people. Plan way ahead about the place, the best time to visit so that you can save some bucks on your airfare & hotel bookings. Weather Update on the particular planned days of shoot/travel, the do’s & don’ts when you visit the place, Location search which also shows the different perspectives of the photographers who had already been there & expressed through their photos helps in giving a better understanding of the place.

And making a good relationship with the locales of a place always help as Google isn’t the answer everywhere. Getting the gear ready a couple of days in advance always helps too as you can’t get certain things like sensor dust cleaning etc done in a day. Deciding on the exact lenses I need to carry for the shoot is also something I work on as soon as I get an understanding about the place from the research.

What do you hope people take away from your work?

The Emotion or the way they feel when they get to see the photograph, I clicked in the form of being in that particular place or be it the way when they listen to a nice poem or lyrics. Self Determination to believe in themselves as an artist and learn things patiently by putting them in practice by not worrying much about the gear etc is what I wish to.

Shanti Stupa - Interview With Indian Travel Photographer Prudhvi Chowdary

I was photographing Shanti Stupa in the Leh Ladakh at 7 AM in the morning & after making this shot, I was somehow unhappy with it because of the missing human element which I wanted to have in this shot & I was patiently waiting for that to happen & suddenly this happened.

Shanti Stupa - Interview With Indian Travel Photographer Prudhvi Chowdary

This had thought me the lesson of being patient in landscape photography.

  • Don’t Generalise. Stay Open-Minded.
  • Make yourself as likable as possible.
  • Never lose your Temper.
  • Keep your Sense of Humour.

Dravidian Chronicles: Kulasai Mutharamman Dasara Festival 2019 by Prabhu Kalidas

Kulasekarapattinam is a small village near Tiruchendur – Tamil Nadu. After the Mysore Dasara festival, this is the most happening place in South India. More than 15 lakhs people from all over Tamil Nadu unite here to worship Muthaaramman temple every year. They use to come by vans and buses and they stay there 12 days using tents to celebrate.

They use to dress themselves in different make-ups like, kali, police, beggars, rakshasas, hunters, military men and of various Gods costumes and come there to pay homage. I was very much eager to take their atmospheric portraits to make a detailed case study about the Dravidian Chronicles.

I use to travel different locations to catch their mood and their lifestyles for portrait study, which will remain a good documentation in the midst of this globalization. Staying with them for days to gain their trust and then only I will start shooting their portraits, where I could get true tones and flavors.

Not only their portrait shoots, I also do street photography capturing their everyday activities and their cultural abilities while performing their rituals in all the happening going around.

We can take photo everywhere, ‘My office is my own way’ in this series all of the photos I took at my workplace some of them I took at the way of office path, and all of those photos I take from my mobile-only, I strongly believe that we can get a well-composed frame anywhere, so every time we don’t need to wait for photo walk or a tour.

Always I used to find a frame from every here, just for sharpening my photography skill, and some time I am not able to control myself to create a frame, and by this I collected all these photos.

My Office Is My Own Way: Photo Series By Smita Mondal

I work for the hotel Industry, just beside my hotel, there is a salon, this photo I took when I am returning from my hotel, and that time I found this light makes an interesting frame, and I am not able to control myself to capture this.

My Office Is My Own Way: Photo Series By Smita Mondal

They are my office colleagues, they are discussing something between them, this is the gate, from here we used to go out, I am going for a tea break in the evening time, and that was the sunset time, and soft light coming through this gate and make this frame interesting.

This is the same entrance here my office colleagues were standing at that photo, where I am entering from this gate, this is the noontime and sunlight is harsh here, and it makes, frame between the frame.

My Personal Best: Turkish Street Photographer Aslı Ulaş Gönen

I live in Turkey. I am doing photography since 2007. I have never received any training in photography, I am trying to improve myself by reading, following the works of my favorite photographers, and practicing on the streets. I love watching as much as taking pictures.

My Personal Best: Turkish Street Photographer Asli Ulas Gonen

I love to capture street photographs and photos from everyday life. In the last few years, I have opted for low-light environments, rainy and foggy days, and especially black and white photos. But in recent years I have started to give importance to color photography and especially to shadows/silhouettes. To be in the streets, freedom and in fact life itself. I think it’s priceless that those tiny moments that you caught in daily chaos and hustle and the immortality of those moments.

My work and interviews have been published in various online magazines and websites (domestic and foreign), I got few awards in competitions, and my work has been exhibited in various countries. There are 6 books published with my photographs as a cover. I was awarded as a photographer of the Year 2016 Eskisehir Art Association (December 2016).

I am married and have two children.
