My Personal Best: Brazilian Fine Art Photographer Nádia Maria

Nádia Maria (1984, Bauru-SP, Brazil) started to photograph as a child at the age of 7, by taking photographs of her dolls. Over the years she explored photography. Her relationship with the camera and the images she captures were born in her childhood, but she became even more involved in her youth.

My Personal Best: Brazilian Fine Art Photographer Nadia Maria

Her photographs stem from her own reflections, from her desire to communicate and create freely and became a personal journal of her innermost thoughts and emotions; a window into her subconscious, letting her inspirations find her and delving into the depths of the human psyche. Nadia Maria describes her work as her poetry, the photos as the poems. Her images convey a plethora of emotions with dreamlike qualities. Nádia Maria’s artworks are represented by Art+Commerce (NY/FR), Vogue (Italy) and The Beaux Arts.

A B.Sc Zoology student from a small village of Howrah, for me it was not an easy task to choose my career in Photography. My journey of Photography begins when I went to pursue a diploma in Primary Teachers Training course despite my reluctance. That time I bought a smartphone and started taking pictures of some of the landscape of my locality to spend my boredom and the Interest of Photography grown up in my mind.

My Personal Best: Indian Photographer Kaushik Dutta

I brought my first camera Fujifilm hs28exr form my pocket money about 3 years ago. Then I seriously started my photographic journey. At first, it was very difficult for me, because my family doesn’t support me for photography. But it gives me pleasure so I continued it. In photography, streets and people’s activities and raw emotions attract me a lot, so I started to observe them and capture those moments. After that, I shifted into Photojournalism. In the photography genre, I like most street and daily life. Now I am working as a freelancer Photojournalist of Bengali Daily Newspaper.

Few of my Achievements:

  • ACEF Youth Photographer of the year 2019

There is a quote from Kofi Annan “Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.”

Education is one of the most powerful tools for fighting poverty and inequality, as well as laying the foundations for solid economic growth. The more we understand the world we live in and the more information we get about other cultures and histories, the greater our chances of understanding points of view that might differ from our own ones.

Here in this article, we are showcasing the best 50 education photos from Agora #Education2019 photo contest. There were 19,513 submissions around the world. Here are the 50 finalists from the contest. You can vote for your favorite photo on the Agora app before November 14th.

My Personal Best: Bangladeshi Street Photographer Md. Sydul Islam Sayed

I’m Sydul Islam residing in Dhaka, Bangladesh. I am a self-taught photographer. I have been working as a fashion photographer in a fashion house for the last 6 months.

My Personal Best: Bangladeshi Street Photographer Md. Sydul Islam Sayed

I had appeal towards photography from my late university days and occasionally took pictures with my less expensive mobile phone. However, after completing my post-graduation, this appeal had turned into an extreme need that’s why I took loan from bank and some from my friend and finally able to buy a beginner level DSLR, Nikon D5200 with a kit lens, in 2017. From early 2017 to late 2018, I used to walk daily 6-8 hours or even more at the street of old Dhaka 4-5 days a week.

I have a great fascination towards colors. Color with the help of soft sunlight creates a magical environment and makes me spell-bound. I always try to capture this magic by adding juxta, layers, mystery, etc. I also like to add light and shadow in my photographs.

After joining a job in late 2018, I hardly have the chance to carry my camera with me that’s why I continue street photography with a mobile phone.

Shark Bay, Western Australia: Beautiful Landscapes By Jerome Berbigier

$

Taken from a small plane (Cessna 172).

Viewed from the sky, Shark Bay is a strangely organic landscape. It’s like looking down a microscope at the cellular structure of the continent. Geology becomes biology, as the salty hollows, connected to the lagoons and sea, remind us of the beginning of life. The water penetrates the land creating multi-colored eco-systems. The richness of the colors, shapes, and textures echo interconnected cells and organs. The connection of land and life is evident in this ancient place: once on the ground, you can wander to the southern end of the bay where the stromatolites, one of the earliest known life forms on Earth, crowd together in the shallows.

About Jerome Berbigier

I was born in the Loire Valley, France, and moved to Australia in 2007. I started photography around the same time. Drawn to the outdoors, growing up close to the Atlantic Ocean and now living in Sydney I have always maintained a strong connection to the sea. Australia has fostered my passion for adventure, travel, and nature in general. I like capturing wide spaces, dramatic landscapes and changing weather conditions. Photography is an extension of this fascination with the land and water. The camera captures the time I spend in unique places, living the moment and showing fractions of it through photographs. The final images are sometimes surreal interpretations. In the last few years, my pictures have been featured in various photography and travel magazines.

Magical Hampi – Photo Series By Dnyaneshwar Prakash Vaidya

Vijaynagar – better known to the world as Hampi is a World Heritage Sight in Karnataka, India. It was the capital of the erstwhile Vijaynagar Empire and its fame was far and wide. Beautifully designed and planned, it was a major business hub in those days. However, it lost its glory when it faced the wrath of several foreign invaders who plundered and destroyed its wonderful architecture. But even today when one visits this place, one is lost in its drama and magnitude. One cannot stop wondering the awe and splendor it must have seen in its glorious days.

Magical Hampi - Photo Series By Dnyaneshwar Prakash Vaidya

You need 3 – 4 days to see Hampi in its fullness. One can find numerous stay places and the variety of cuisine it offers ranges from continental to the typical South Indian fare. If one wants to really enjoy Hampi, it’s better to have the sumptuous and healthy south Indian delicacy without a doubt.

Magical Hampi - Photo Series By Dnyaneshwar Prakash Vaidya

The Temples and the architecture available to see today are still in quite good conditions. When I first visited Hampi I was flummoxed by the wonders it had to show. My imagination was just blown out and I was lost wondering as to what to click and what not to click. I was totally lost in this stone world and amazed at the work done in those days. Wherever your sight goes its just stones, stone work and stone sculptures. Being an amateur photographer, it took me lot of time to capture its entire beauty through my shutter, because everything I would visualize was stunningly beautiful. I stayed for three days. The richness and grandeur is intact even today. Hampi is definitely a paradise for any photographer. Whatever I saw in these 3 days, I have mentioned here.

I am sure you will love my photographs and the beauty of Hampi. Thank you.

I live in Kuala Lumpur and I am doing photography since 2011. In 2018, after graduated from the local University in Kuala Lumpur in the Faculty of Engineering, I worked as a Mechanical Engineer and need to travel. While travel, I love to record the images of daily life people in that place. Eventually, my interested in street photography is getting deeper. Until I decided to buy some Street Photography books, join a professional street photography workshop, doing some research and always every week to record daily life at Kuala Lumpur.

For me Street Photography always in my heart because I can capture decisive moments through my camera that I can share with my friend out there about the people, place, culture, and religion.

Pyramiden: Haunted, Abandoned Soviet Mining Town By Jonathan May

$

I’m fascinated by people living on the fringes of society, and the haunted, abandoned Soviet mining town Pyramiden has been on my bucket list for the past eight years.

Standing in Pyramiden, perched on a glacier, with guns out for polar bear protection and overseen by the Northern most statue of Lenin (78.6561) is terrifying yet inspiring. The isolation and the desolation of the place is unmatched, the power, beauty and the decay all wrapped up in one scent while the blistering 100km winds pound on your face reminding you winter is coming.

In its glory days life here was vibrant and rich, comrades danced, sang and slaved to the hum of the machines, while the KGB watched on from the shadows. Not long after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the order came down for Pyramiden to close, and everyone had mere hours to pack their lives into a suitcase and move back to the mainland. One decision that impacted the lives of over one thousand residents forever.

It is as if Pyramiden has just been thawed out of a glacier, preserved and frozen in time and a true testimony to the spirit of Russian endeavour. Left standing alone in the abandoned buildings your heart pounds… the realisation of life’s fragility is reinforced as the corroding structures mirrors the hopes and dreams of all who lived here.

Once one of the purest expressions of Communism in the Soviet Union, now the empty echos of the workers song whisper in the wind, down the halls and they ache through the melting ice. What year will Lenin will be submerged in rising waters and all that remains will be distant memories?

All we have is this moment and the beauty that we find – nothing is ever forever.

About Jonathan May

Photography has been one amazing journey, teaching me so much about life and taking me all over the world. The beautiful thing is with technology I feel I am constantly learning and evolving.

My passion started in boarding school, if I wasn’t playing Rugby or basketball I would have a camera in my hand, and my high school submission exhibited as part of Art Express.

After school, I started working in publishing for three years and was surrounded by imagery and photography on a daily basis. I then transitioned to advertising where I learnt how the clogs turn in agency land but realised I needed more so I started studying and assisting in 2006 and shooting in 2009.

In the last 6 years, I have lived in 6 countries in 4 continents…Sydney, Paris, Moscow, Kenya, The Ivory Coast and Los Angeles. Working on some incredible projects with amazing people all over the world, and for that, I am truly grateful.

With my imagery I am always focused on evoking emotion from the viewer the goal from the start has always been simple storytelling.

In my spare time, I am usually surfing, choking sweaty men in a Jiu-Jitsu class or chilling with my family on the northern beaches.

5 Benefits of Arts for Students

When we talk about educational reforms, we usually focus on changes that would reduce stress among students. The rates of stress are high. Most students feel anxious at school all the time, and the anxiety persists as they think about ways to handle the piles of assignments.

In primary and secondary school, art education is part of the curriculum. When teachers are devoted enough, they encourage their students to create paintings that convey memories, compose a melody, or recite monologues. But when students go to college, they aren’t required to take art classes, unless they got art scholarship and chose that major.

Does this mean that someone who studies economy or programming should only focus on developing technical skills? No. When college students infuse art in their education, they begin to understand the art of education.

Benefits of Arts for Students

5 Ways College Students Benefit from the Arts

#1 Art Enhances Creativity

When you express yourself in any artistic way, you trigger creative processes in your mind. You don’t have to be the greatest artist in the world. You don’t have to paint and host your own exhibitions. Elective art classes aren’t extremely challenging; they just require you to express yourself.

You’ll benefit from those creative thinking skills in any way possible. When you decide to hire an expert college essay writer because you can’t complete a paper, why does that happen? Usually, it’s because you didn’t start work on time. But in most cases, it’s also because you weren’t creative enough to tackle the topic from a unique perspective. Regular practice of any kind of art may improve that aspect of your personality.

Benefits of Arts for Students

#2 Arts Help You to Understand Yourself

You can’t create art without expressing yourself. Whether it’s a photograph, painting, hand-made sculpture, or a piece of music, it came out of your soul. You don’t even have to create art; you can understand yourself by observing it. Art has the power to awaken different emotions in each observer. Long-forgotten thoughts will arise to surface and you’ll need to deal with them.

This aspect of art can be scary since it can reveal your darkest emotions. But it’s also beautiful since it helps you grow as a person.

Benefits of Arts for Students

#3 Arts Enhance Communication

When you create art, you communicate with the world through it. But when you look at another person’s art, they communicate with you, too.

You’ll learn a great deal about communication by studying the arts. With time and practice, you’ll come to understand the emotional, physical, and verbal language of artists. You’ll appreciate the tone, body language, and other subtle aspects of communication. And if you start creating art, you’ll learn how to communicate vividly and clearly.

Benefits of Arts for Students

#4 Music Improves Your Memory and Cognition

If your university offers an elective course in music and you were having doubts about it, you should definitely take it. Research shows that musical training enhances cognitive development. Let’s be more precise: it trains your ears so you can understand and remember words and lectures more easily. It will also improve your understanding and pronunciation of foreign languages, as well as all executive brain functions.

Plus, music lectures are fun. Your professor may throw in a class about the origins and development of house music. Don’t worry; you won’t be stuck with Mozart all the time.

Benefits of Arts for Students

#5 Arts Encourage You to Adopt the Growth Mindset

When you start learning how to play an instrument or express yourself through any kind of art, you realize that you’re getting better with practice. Some people are born with impressive artistic skills, but even they have to work on them. It’s 1% talent and 99% practice in everything you do. Even with zero talent and 100% practice, you’ll be getting better at anything you choose to do.

Art teaches that valuable lesson about commitment, practice, and growth. You’ll benefit from it not only throughout your studies, but for your entire life.

Benefits of Arts for Students

You’ll Only See Benefits of Arts Education

The arts are just as important as economy, programming, math, social sciences, or any other course you’re taking. Even if your college major has nothing to do with artistic skills, you’ll still benefit from obtaining them.

Just think about it: you’ll benefit from creativity in any career you choose. Art education encourages creativity, so the connection is clear.

Art will also encourage growth mindset, self-expression, communication, and improved cognition. You’ll gain all that just by making art and learning more about it.

BIO: Joshua Robinson has always been passionate about literature and music. As a blogger and freelance writer, those are the topics he often tackles. Joshua is convinced that there’s a dormant artist in each and every one of us. We just need to awaken our creative potential.

The Antidote to Suicide: Photo Series By Shafiqul Islam

It’s not always easy to spot depression in people. They might look like they are completely alright from the outside, living a normal life. But it’s only because some of them are too good at hiding their feelings and keeping it inside. But at some point, it leaves their soul in such torment that it leads them having intrusive thoughts about suicide. But it doesn’t mean it’s impossible to get out of it. A friend or anyone from the family can come forward to help him/her realize that it is not the end of the world and they are not alone.

They should convince them to seek professional help from a therapist or a psychiatrist. But for people who are depressed, it is not easy to gain their trust. Because they always have this feeling that nobody understands them or feels the pain they are feeling. So they are reluctant to talk about it or seek help from people, even to the ones who are very close to them. So it’s important to make them feel that there are people who understand and is willing to help them and motivate them to do new things in life, explore and meet new people. All they need is a little bit of trust and hope that it will be alright and they still have time to start over their life in a healthy and better way.

Here is such a story, where Santi plays the character of the friend who helps Samara out to fight her suicidal thoughts.

My Personal Best: Bangladeshi Photographer Nihab Rahman

My name is Nihab Rahman. I’m a 22-year-old travel photographer based in Asia. I was born and raised in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. My passion for photography started in 2013 when I was in high school. I found happiness through every photograph I took. Photography became something that helps me overcome every difficult situation I face on a daily basis.

My Personal Best: Bangladeshi Photographer Nihab Rahman

As I grew up near the World’s Longest Beach, Cox’s Bazar, it has always been easy for me to find the breath-taking sunsets. I discovered that I like taking pictures of sunsets and day by day, I was getting used to taking more and more pictures. With every photo I took, my love for photography continued to grow. From portrait photography to landscapes, to still life and miniature, my portfolio continues to grow. I love exploring my city and the villages that surround it. Most of all, I loved sharing local stories to highlight the beauty of Bangladesh.

What really inspired me to explore different styles of photography are the people around the world who are harnessing photography as both their passion and a full-time job. I decided to inspire others through my photos, just as I was inspired by those around the world who are dedicated to their photography. I find a different meaning of life in each photograph I take. The never-ending chance of capturing and creating photographs gives me the reason behind continuing this journey.

With the Rohingya crisis so close to my home, I have been fortunate enough to do what I love most: taking photos and helping people share their stories. I have learned about love, loss, and the fight for freedom.

I have been lucky to explore the beauty of Thailand and Nepal with Books Unbound, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing informal learning opportunities for marginalized communities. The beauty and culture outside of my country inspired me to travel more and more. My wish for the future is to travel the entire world to take photos, finding something new to discover with each journey. I want to repeat the journey over and over to find more than I could ever expect. My definition of a successful artist is to have a platform for others so they can taste my journeys through the snapshots and memories I have created.

My Personal Best: Russian Photographer Maxim Korotchenko

The photography gently came into my life at the age of 27 spontaneously, first as a hobby – I just liked that moment when you can easily share your emotions with others through the image you made. At that moment I didn’t have an idea to have it as a profession. But about a year after I was offered a job as a staff photographer of the governor, and that was the start of my photographic career.

At that time I met Alexander Shevelev – he was my first teacher in photography. I remember how I asked him “Teach me please, how to make a masterpiece?”. He laughed. And that was the start of my creative way. I wonder how could the photography transforms the ordinary thing to something greater, that wonders other people and makes them notice things they usually pass by.

My Personal Best: Russian Photographer Maxim Korotchenko

With the help of photography, you transform everyday things into the new images, give them new meanings with new associations. Hundreds and thousands of people pass by but you as a photographer stop and press the button. And with every new shot, you reveal this world anew for them. But the main criteria – to wonder myself.

The main criteria for me – spontaneity. The photograph should be essential, alive. I never know what picture will I get next. It’s a swing and mix between genres, between what I do as a professional and as an author. It’s not too good when you hardly identify yourself in some movement. The genres limits always have a clipping effect on your creativity. I’m trying to be flexible, not to think about genre, but think about the process.

Soumya N Ghosh based in Oman but originally from Kolkata, India. More fine art photography with love of nature. However particularly drawn to shapes, patterns, and texture of nature and changes, which are evolving every day. To stories of beauty in unique art formation, challenging environments and those who live in a close bond with nature. Nature-inspired me to be creative with my natural surroundings.

Ventured out as a hobbyist photographer since 2012. Even now I am hobbyist but started to think a little seriously about photography since 2013 while I got some national and international recognition on my passion for travel and photography. A very few to mention like Unicef, Nat Geo Abu Dhabi, Nikon Middle East & Africa, Camarena, India Photography Awards, etc. along with a few other features and exhibitions.

I always wanted to do something with painting but somehow did not progress further.

What is your view about photography?

Capture the present as much possible which passes by every moment. Explore the opportunity to make a unique frame out of nothing which challenges me to do better.

Trying and looking at subjects from different angles, while I probably don’t want to be known as the photographer who always takes photos of common frames.

Which genre of photography do you like/practice and why?

Not restricted to a specific genre rather love experimenting on different subjects. However monochrome and fine art remain as my soft corner.

I originally shot anything that interested me. I am drawn in by the simplicity of nature that creates a challenge into a little frame.

Not that much seriously followed except Nat Geo, but few to name like Magnum, Getty Images, Associated Press, World photo agency, etc who are strongly working on the recent issue and human values.

Does a good camera play a major role in photography?

In certain circumstances or some specialized photography, you may need an advanced camera but that may not be applicable or restrict anyone to create a good photo with any image processing devices.

More than a year now, I am experimenting with mobile photography for ariel shots from the flight. So much fun that may not be achieved from a serious camera.

In the end what you capture and how you capture matters not by what you capture.

Share three names of the photographers who have inspired you a lot?

So many to name from national or international level but Ansel Adam still my all-time favorite besides Sebastiao Salgado and recently T J Thorne’s work.

Yes, It is. It’s’ now open and a huge platform for all where you can connect with friends with different thoughts, cultures, and opportunities to reach a large viewer base but again your work will matter at the end.

But beware of popularity addiction and get carried away to likes. We also not an exception, we been influenced. Then one point of time needs to control and put back self on track for what you intended at the beginning.

Do you think that a quality workshop can change the mindset or point of view of any photographer and why? Should we attend a quality workshop frequently?

I am sure there are advantages of getting trained in any area of the profession to hone your skill and there should not be an exception here as well.

However, if you choose consciously of what you want from such a workshop and what kind to attend, I am sure it is very helpful to improve further, which is priceless. Also, so many technical aspects and doubts can be clarified.

What is the difference between a good photographer and a bad photographer?

Being photography as an art it is very difficult to define. It is a very relative to perspective, hence to define bad or good possibly unjustified.

However, if we don’t go exactly the meaning of the words, I may say a good photographer should be honest and vice versa for bad.

What should our moto towards photography- Self-satisfaction or viewers’ attention/satisfaction?

I believe both are important, where self-satisfaction boosts self to do better and be more creative. Viewers feedback also important at the same time to know how your work stand-out in mass. Moreover, if the creation does not reach the public to entertain viewers’ mind it lost its charm in times.

What is meant by comfort zone in photography? How it ruins the carrier?

We all are human beings and naturally tend to be complacent on our smallest achievement or recognition. At times it may be a feel-good to move forward, but chances to be trapped of overconfidence or so-called comfort zone. Yes if that overconfidence influences your work or on you, highly likely you may struggle.

What is your opinion about documentary photography? Do you like it? If yes, why?

If you are a fan of photography as a subject of art, the documentary has its unique place in this field. Being it a single image or multiple image series, it narrates a story through visual narration without describing the story. It allows viewers to perceive the story and story behind to connect with reality.

The light, decisive moment, content, ambiance, good gear, according to you which is the most essential element in photography?

It’s hard to be very specific, maybe all or maybe a few can be considered depending on what is in the frame or the way you want to present it. For example, a great light, a decisive moment, a unique expression or maybe a classic frame. But in the end, it comes down to a feeling. The best images for me are the ones, which make me feel something, whether be an essence of a place or an emotion.

Are you associated with any particular brand or brand ambassador if yes, specify?

Being a gadget freaky not restricted to any brand or influenced till date, rather love to experiment with new gadgets. Any innovation attracts me but a little addicted to the retro feel of the product.

Even I don’t feel I am a photographer till date rather I feel I am a photo enthusiast with an interest in travel places and witness a frame. I wish I could progress on my painting interest.

Concepts and definitions in photography are getting changed every day. what is your opinion about the future of photography?

True, the photography world is constantly evolving and I think it’s important for photographers to develop and push their boundaries. So many creative talents in each area of interest like photography coming up very fast. Hence there are more competition, different experiment, advance technology, easy access to social media & Internet, more exposure and different opinions, which all together good for the future of this art form. When it evolves more it moves forward, does not end.

Share your goal in photography?

Build a portfolio of small scale at best possible. I wish in the future, can associate my work with charities. I’d love to use my photography for some good cause in society.

Role of a smile in photography- share your views?

A very interesting question at the end. I feel there are two smiles in general, One smile is to myself and another smile to someone else. When both in action, it is a natural emotional bond to connect, which eases photographers to capture the moment he desired with the contact.
